Special Magistrate

South Tucson City Court is accepting applications for the position of Special Magistrate.  The Special Magistrate is appointed for the purpose of hearing a particular case, or as a substitute for the City Magistrate in their absence.

Applicants shall be at least 30 years of age, of good moral character, admitted to the practice of law in, and be a resident of, the State of Arizona for five (5) years preceding their taking of office as required by Article 6, Section 31 of the Arizona Constitution.

Can I file a Small Claim case at South Tucson City Court

No. South Tucson City Court does not process Small Claims.  You may obtain Small Claims forms in person at Pima County Justice Court or online at www.jp.pima.gov

Can I pay all of my tickets at the South Tucson City Court?

No.  If you have outstanding citations with other Courts, you must contact that particular Court to take care of your citations.  You are only able to pay fines/fees for citations that were filed with South Tucson City Court.

How can I see the Judge and/or the Prosecutor about my case?

You must appear in person on your scheduled court date.

What do I do if a Law Enforcement Officer has told me that my license is suspended?

You may contact the Motor Vehicle Department and get a print out of the holds on your driver’s license. This printout will tell you which Court you will need to contact to take care of the suspension.

What if I am a minor (under the age of 18)?

If you are a minor and have received a citation, you must be accompanied by your legal guardian when you appear on your Court date.

What do I do if there is a warrant for my arrest?

 If there has been a warrant issued for your arrest, you may come in to the court 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, and pay the bond amount. The warrant will be quashed and a future court date will be set. If you can't pay the bond amount, you may attend court any Tuesday or Wednesday at 9:30 am, however the warrant will remain in effect until an appearance before the judge.

My car has been impounded. What can the Court do to help me?

If your car has been impounded, you must contact the police agency (For example: South Tucson Police Department, Tucson Police Department) that impounded it. The Court has no jurisdiction over your car being impounded. For more information, you may read the back of the impoundment paperwork that was given to you by the Officer.

Does the Court accept credit cards as payment on fines?

Yes.  The Court accepts VISA and MASTERCARD as payment of your court fines. The Court also accepts cashier’s checks, money orders, personal checks, and cash.  Please do not pay cash through the mail. Checks should be made out to South Tucson City Court.

What if I cannot pay my fine in full on the day of sentencing?

The court by law (ARS 12-116) must add an additional charge of $20.00 to any fine not paid in full on the day it is imposed. The Court can set up a reasonable payment schedule, with payments being due monthly until the balance is paid in full.  If you elect to have the Court set a payment schedule in lieu of paying your fine and fees in full, please be advised that if any payment is not received on or before the due date, your license will be suspended; additional fees will be added to your balance; a Warrant may be issued for your arrest; and your case will be sent to a collection agency without any further notice from the Court.

What happens if I fail to appear on my court date or if I fail to pay my traffic ticket by my court date?

 If you are charged with a Civil Traffic offense and you fail to appear, or pay your fine, you will be found responsible by default. The Court will add additional fees subject to state statutes and town ordinances. Your failure to appear will be recorded with the Department of Motor Vehicles who will promptly suspend your driving privileges. Your driving privileges will remain suspended until such time as you pay the fine in full or make other arrangements with the Court. Continued 'Driving on a Suspended License' is a class one misdemeanor.

Should you fail to appear on your Criminal Misdemeanor offense, a warrant will be issued for your arrest, and a bond amount established. You will be charged with the additional offense of Failure to Appear (ARS§ 13-2904) a class one misdemeanor. The warrant will remain in effect until such time that you are arrested and post bond, or until you appear in court to satisfy the warrant.  You may appear on any Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 9:30 am to address an active warrant with the court.
